WISCOMP is one of the Founder Members of NTS (Non Traditional Security)-Asia Consortium and is invited to participate at its annual meetings by the Consortium Secretariat at S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS), Centre for Non-Traditional Studies at Nanyang Technological University , Singapore. This year’s theme was Climate Change and Sustainable Development Goals in the Asia Pacific. The meeting was held in Singapore on 30-31 March 2017. Ms. Seema Kakran, Deputy Director, WISCOMP attended the meeting on behalf of WISCOMP.
She made a presentation titled ‘Climate change and SDG 16: Challenges before India’. In her presentation she foreground the challenges India is likely to encounter in the course of making progress on SDG 16 on Providing Peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development. She foregrounded how these challenges are likely to grow in numbers and magnitude as a consequence of climate change and related disasters in the region. The issue of ‘marginalization’ due to resource poverty and geographic location was particularly foregrounded. She concluded with a brief analysis of how local level interventions can contribute to mitigating the adverse impacts of climate change and promote inclusion and justice.
