WISCOMP conducted a five-hour workshop on ‘The Power of One: Be the Change’ at Bluebells School International on 23rd January 2017 as part of the School’s 60 year celebrations. The workshop focused on the practice of empathy as an important value that high-school students can cultivate. There were 130 students from national and international schools in Korea, Germany, Myanmar, Japan, Turkey and India.
The workshop opened with WISCOMP’s Director Dr. MeenakshiGopinath delivering a motivational speech on the components of leadership, which include gratitude, simplicity, joy, beauty and abundance. She encouraged students to use the following practices when they encounter conflict or are experiencing a difficult phase in their personal lives: differentiating between destructive and constructive emotions, suspending judgement, taking into consideration the perspectives of others and cultivating empathy inside-out.
This was followed by an interactive session by peacebuilding practitioners Ms. Jaya Iyer and Ms. Shreya Jani during which students worked in small groups to prepare presentations on the Power of One. A range of issues were addressed. These included bullying, homophobia, problems which orphaned children face and environmental degradation. The underlying theme was Be the Change: Social Change Begins with the Practice of Empathy and Respect for Diversity and Differences.
