Among the very few organizations in South Asia which develops curriculum in conflict transformation, WISCOMP is a nodal center for the design and teaching of courses on peace and conflict studies. Staff members have been invited and are consulted by schools and colleges across South Asia to develop innovative curricula and teaching methods in peace education and to conduct teacher training workshops in peacebuilding.
The first initiative in this area was undertaken by WISCOMP in 2005 when it worked with Lady Shri Ram College (LSR), Delhi University, to develop curriculum for a Diploma in Peacebuilding. Organization members have, since, been teaching courses in this Diploma at the College. Some of the courses offered are: Nonviolence, Violence and Conflict Transformation; Introduction to Conflict Analysis and Conflict Transformation; Mediation and Negotiation; and, Human Rights, Gender, Justice and Reconciliation. While funds for the Diploma came from the University Grants Commission, WISCOMP supported the Peacebuilding Program at LSR in the following ways:
Given the paucity of course material in this field in India, the organization has made available to students and to readers in general, books, journals, and papers in areas such as conflict analysis, conflict transformation, reconciliation, justice, and nonviolence. Aware of the need to train educators in this field, WISCOMP plans to offer an intensive course on ‘teaching peacebuilding’ to educators at the University of Delhi.
