Our fourth edition of ‘Conversations on Mediation’ presented a compelling case for compassion at the heart of peace mediation. The dialogue featured Prabha Sankaranarayan, President and CEO of Mediators Beyond Borders International, who shared insights drawn from her work in Ukraine, Gaza, Colombia, and Syria. She emphasized that mediation is not limited to settlement or negotiation but is a transformative process rooted in healing, relationship-building, and sustained engagement.

Underscoring mediation as a space where multiple truths can coexist, the importance of anchoring peace efforts in local traditions was highlighted. The conversation also touched on the idea that mediation must be accessible beyond legal professionals and viewed as a civic skill relevant to educators, students, and communities. The dialogue reinforced the significance of proximate peacebuilding, where those most affected by conflict lead the process and of building local capacity. It concluded with a reflection on compassion not only as a value, but as a strategic practice.
