In January 2023, the third edition of the Log-in Gender’s Book Café explored women’s writings in fiction. Khadija Mastur’s Aangan (transl: Women’s Courtyard by Daisy Rockwell) served as an entry point to address questions of identity and displacement. How do women rewrite their selves in fiction? Cross references to Gitanjali Shree’s Ret Samadhi created new layers of understanding of women’s predicament and choices during violent conflicts such as the Partition. Why do women’s quarters become spaces for political intrigue? How do women navigate the norms of sharafat (respectability)? How do the internal and external boundaries of the courtyard/home/the inner world influence the exercise of choice and agency?
Co-founders of the Tasavvur Collective, Zehra Kazmi and Sheelalipi Sahana, along with the Mehr Farooqi, Professor, University of Virginia made insightful presentations, deftly facilitated by Dr. Maya Joshi, Associate Professor, Lady Shri Ram College. Watch the session here:
