Book Details
This report documents the proceedings of a WICOMP Forum on Security, Displacement and Livelihood of Coastal Communities in Southern India held in Kanyakumari, Tamil Nadu. The forum consisted of a discussion among civil society actors, state actors, academics and activists on the non-traditional aspects of security of the local fishing communities of the Indian coastal region. The forum witnessed an enriching conversation on the effects of the government policies relating to the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ), Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM), establishment of nuclear and thermal power plants in ecologically-sensitive areas; and of the effects of the industrial activities like sand mining, toursim industries and seafood industries. The speakers at the sessions noted the impact that decisions taken by people placed away from the coastal areas were negatively impacting the lives of local fisherfolks, where women were seen as the most vulnerable.
